Mission: The mission of the Federal University of Maranhão is generate, expand, disseminate and preserve ideas and knowledge in the various fields of knowledge, to propose solutions aimed at intellectual, human and socio-cultural development, well as to the improvement of the quality of life of the human being in general and situated as a dynamic centre of development local, regional and national, acting through processes integrated teaching, research and extension, in exploitation of human and regional potential, and in citizen and professional training, based on humanistic, critical, reflexive, investigative, ethical and socially responsible.

The following data gives a quick reading on the scientific performance in the last years. The research ranking refers to the volume, impact and quality of the institution's research output. The innovation ranking is calculated on the number of patent applications of the institution and the citations that its research output receives from patents. Finally, the societal ranking is based on the number of pages of the institution's website and the number of backlinks and mentions from social networks.
